"Expelliarmus!" Lain Clemenceau shrilled for what seemed to be the hundreth time. A jet of bright red light burst from the tip of her wand, disarming the crude opponent she had constructed out of spellbooks, parchment, desks, chalk, ink and quills.

As the spell hit, a cascade of quills and chalk erupted everywhere. Ink sprayed on her face and robes. Lain cried out in exaustion.

Lainease Clemenceau was the Slytherin House Champion. It was her undying ambition that had gotten her in that House, and her undying ambition that caused her to stay up past midnight to practice her spells for the Tri-Wizard Tournament.

She slumped uneasily into a nearby chair and propped her face in her hands. She had been at it for hours. Casting a sideways glance at her watch, she learned that she had spent nearly five hours in this room, mastering her spellwork.

A groan escaped her lips. She wasn't very concerned that anyone would hear her--not even the ghosts. It was two in the morning, for God's sake...

She couldn't stop now. She hadn't even begun to work on her Patronuses yet, and she knew that that would easily be the most challenging of them all. In the past five hours, she had covered hexes and some jinxes that may come in handy. Just now, she'd mastered the Disarming Charm and the Summoning Charm.

What she really needed was a partner. She knew that she should have taken one of her friends with her, but she had been so eager to get straight to the spellwork...

She groaned again and began to collect the scattered ink and quills and desks and spellbooks that were strewn across the room, her engery thriving on the dim hope that someone would show up.

An odd sort of electric jolt caused Aspen to spring out of bed and land in a pile of bunched up sheets on the floor. Rubbing her head and mentally asking herself if she had just been struck by lightning, Aspen blinked until her eyes adjusted to the darkness.

By now, Aspen felt extremely out of it. She was even unsure of where she was until she knocked her elbow on the side of her bed. OK, so she wasn't dead. That's good at least. She was sure she would have seen some sort of bright light anyway.

Rolling her eyes at herself, Aspen slowly stood up and threw her sheets back onto her bed, which seemed impossible to straighten out by now. Although she could have just rolled herself onto an electrical socket, Aspen was curious to find what had jolted her awake. Some sort of late-night magic somewhere else in the castle, she supposed. If not that, what else could it have been? She just got struck by lightning? She glanced out her window; it wasn't even raining.

Breathing out something between a yawn and a sigh, Aspen pulled her night robes around her body, and stepped into her slippers. She glanced at her watch; it was two in the morning. Someone was probably doing some all-night Tournament practicing. She couldn't blame them; she probably would have done the same if she were participating.

She whispered a quick incantation to transport her outside the Ravenclaw Commonrooms without making a sound. That always came in handy. By now, she could see some torches still lit, which led to a few empty classrooms down one of the hallways. Yup...definitely some late-night spell practice that woke me up. It sounds like someone's using power tools in there! Aspen shook her head, smiling slightly. Whatever. Now that I'm up, might as well go check it out.

Quietly approaching the door of the classroom, Aspen gave it four knocks.

Lain paused. A knock? Could it be? Or was she simply going a bit stir-crazy?

She felt her heart pound faster. Could it be a Professor, doing they're midnight rounds? Or worse?

Armed with only her wand, Lain took in a deep breath of air and swung open the door.

There stood a girl, perhaps three or so years elder than herself, with dark hair not much unlike herself and a slender frame. By far, the most noticable thing about this girl was her wide, dark eyes that gleamed in the pale moonlight.

"Hi," Lain said, yawning. Maybe it was just her drowsiness, but she could somehow not work up the desire to question the girl further.

"What brings you out here in this time of night?" Lain asked quizzically, glancing at her watch again. Quarter past two.

Upon realizing it was in fact a student, Aspen let out a sigh of relief. The girl appeared to be extremely worn-out, her drowsiness definitely noticeable. Aspen yawned. Yes, yawns can be extremely contagious - especially at quarter past two in the morning.

Aspen smiled softly, reminding her she wasn't there to yell at her for being up so late. It's only natural to get nervous before the tournaments, and an all-night practice session is generally acceptable in this case.

"Hello," she replied. It was now that she noticed a dark figure behind the girl that appeared to be constructed out of various classroom objects.

"I see you're practicing for tomorrow," she smiled and held out her hand. "Aspen Willow, Ravenclaw Prefect. Are you the Slytherin House Champion?" she asked, forgetting how tired she was for the moment.
